Varicose veins: definition and description

The term varicose vein (plural varices) describes exactly what you see: an enlarged vein. The colloquial name "varicose veins" can therefore be misleading when patients think of arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that transport blood from the heart to the body. Veins are the opposite, as they transport blood from the body back towards the heart. For the veins in the legs in particular, this is a feat of strength, as they not only have a long way to go, but also have to bring the blood upwards against gravity. This is why venous insufficiency usually occurs in the lower extremities and manifests itself as varicose veins. Visible serpentine lines appear under the skin. The varicose veins protrude noticeably, look unsightly and give the affected person the feeling of heavy legs. Varicose veins are therefore a vein condition that should be referred to a specialist.

Causes of varicose veins

If you have varicose veins, the outflow of blood is impaired. The underlying cause is sought during the anamnesis (the personal consultation between doctor and patient). Varicose veins are often caused by persistent obesity. The increased storage of fatty tissue makes it more difficult to transport blood, which is clearly shown by varicose veins over the years. However, even slim people can develop varicose veins. In this case, the venous valves are often no longer fully functional and the blood always sinks downwards on its way due to gravity. Another reason is hormonal changes such as those that occur during pregnancy. This is why many women discover their first varicose veins during pregnancy.

Treatment options for varicose veins

The treatment of varicose veins should always be tailored to the patient's individual situation. Dr. Linde has decades of experience as a specialist and continuously expands his knowledge at further training courses. At the VENENCLINIC, you will therefore receive comprehensive advice based on the latest technology and knowledge.
For example, a surgical procedure is possible in which varicose veins are removed in their entirety from the venous circulation. This method is known as stripping. As a minimally invasive procedure, varicose vein removal can be performed within 30 minutes under local anesthesia. After a few hours of rest, patients can get up and walk without hesitation.
A newer and particularly gentle procedure is called ELVeS™ and works with laser technology. Here, the varicose veins are treated without surgical incisions by using laser heat to shrink them in a targeted manner. Get detailed advice on other treatment options.

Final treatment for varicose veins

The methods described are intended to treat the vein that is causing the varicose veins as the underlying problem. The visible varicose veins are usually only the famous tip of the iceberg. Once the triggering factor has been treated, the visible varicose veins should always be removed using the hook technique.
