The measurement of venous refill time using infrared probes – known as "light reflection rheography" – completes the routine examination of venous disease. This refers to the time it takes for the venous reservoirs in the leg to refill after previous emptying. It allows the overall venous situation in the leg to be assessed and provides an indication of the extent of venous insufficiency. Infrared probes, which are similar to ECG electrodes, are attached to both of the patient's lower legs for the measurement. After determining the resting curve, the calf muscle pump is activated, which empties the venous reservoirs. To do this, the patient must move their feet up and down 10-15 times. The refilling of the leg with blood is then registered and also recorded as a curve. This examination is also quick, easy to perform and completely painless.

Some examiners use so-called "photo-plethysmography" instead of this method, which provides very similar results in terms of measurement type and information.
