An ultrasound Doppler is a small device, usually no bigger than a pack of cigarettes, with a pen-like probe. It emits ultrasound waves that are reflected by the flowing blood, registered by the probe and converted into acoustic signals that can then be heard as noise. This method can be used to assess the individual trunks of the superficial and deep vein system. The Doppler makes it possible to follow the hidden course of each varicose vein to its point of origin, even if it is only visible on the lower leg. Certain manipulations by the doctor, such as lightly squeezing the lower leg and thigh muscles, the varicose veins themselves and also allowing the patient to "press or cough", provide important information about the valve function of the veins as well as for the diagnosis of thrombosis.
Ultrasound is painless, inexpensive and provides valuable information about the condition of the veins.
