Even the smallest injury (e.g. when gardening) can cause varicose veins to bleed, especially if the varicose veins on the legs are pronounced.

Varicose vein bleeding: varicose veins on the legs

Varicose vein bleeding is often very severe and requires rapid action. The therapy is quite simple and can be carried out by anyone.

  1. Lay the patient down, hold the legs up.
  2. A light pressure bandage is applied to the injured area of the leg using sterile gauze – or a clean handkerchief if necessary. This will stop the varicose vein bleeding.
  3. See a leg specialist as soon as possible to have the veins checked.

If a varicose vein has burst and blood is leaking from under the skin, it is necessary to elevate the leg, stabilize the area with a compression bandage and consult a specialist as soon as possible.

Variceal bleeding: varicose veins in the oesophagus

As a result of advanced liver cirrhosis, varicose veins in the oesophagus can burst and bleed. Oesophageal variceal bleeding is a life-threatening complication that can lead to dysfunction of internal organs and shock. Hemostasis must be performed immediately as emergency treatment.
