VenaSeal® is a modern, minimally invasive method for treating varicose veins. Instead of surgically removing the affected saphenous vein or sealing it with heat, it is permanently closed using a medical adhesive (cyanoacrylate). This technique is often referred to as vein sealing or varicose vein closure.
The treatment is particularly gentle, virtually painless, and does not require general anesthesia. In contrast to endoluminal thermal ablation (laser treatment) or vein stripping surgery, VenaSeal® is unfortunately (not yet) covered by health insurance. However, the removal of any side branches using the phlebectomy hook technique can be performed during the same session and is typically covered by all insurance providers.
During the VenaSeal® procedure, the affected saphenous vein is accessed through a tiny skin puncture using a fine catheter. Under continuous ultrasound guidance, the medical adhesive is precisely delivered into the diseased vein. Gentle external pressure allows small amounts of the adhesive to be applied at defined intervals.
The adhesive polymerizes – meaning it hardens – within approximately 30 seconds. This permanently seals the vein and stops the abnormal blood reflux. Blood is then naturally redirected through healthy veins.
The closed vein initially remains in the body and is gradually broken down and completely absorbed through natural processes over approximately nine to twelve months.
The procedure usually takes only 20 to 30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients can leave the VENENCLINIC immediately after treatment and return to work, home, and their normal daily routine.
Compared to traditional surgical methods (vein stripping) or thermal techniques such as laser or radiofrequency therapy, VenaSeal® offers numerous advantages. Since the method does not use heat, there is no risk of nerve damage – a common issue with stripping (up to 10%) or endoluminal thermal ablation (approx. 1–5%). General anesthesia is not required; local anesthesia at the puncture site is sufficient, and if needed, additional local anesthesia can be used for treating side branches with the phlebectomy hook technique.
After the procedure, compression therapy with stockings is not necessary or only required for a short time. You are immediately mobile and can quickly return to your daily activities, work, and sports. Travel or long-haul flights are usually possible as early as 24 hours after treatment.
Many patients report immediate relief from symptoms such as heaviness, tension, or swelling in the legs shortly after the procedure.
VenaSeal® is particularly suitable for insufficiency of the great or small saphenous vein as well as for pronounced varicose veins. It is also an excellent option for patients seeking a gentle treatment without surgery or general anesthesia.
Whether VenaSeal® is suitable for you is determined during a detailed examination using modern duplex ultrasound diagnostics. This allows us to precisely assess the condition of your veins and create an individualized treatment plan.
VenaSeal® closes the affected saphenous vein using a medical tissue adhesive based on cyanoacrylate. The adhesive is delivered into the vein via a thin catheter under ultrasound guidance. There, it hardens within seconds and permanently seals the vein wall. Blood flow is immediately redirected into healthy veins. The sealed vein is gradually broken down and naturally absorbed by the body over several months.
The treatment is generally virtually painless. Only the puncture site is locally anesthetized. General anesthesia is not required.
The actual treatment usually takes only 20 to 30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis.
In most cases, no compression therapy is required.
Yes. The procedure has been scientifically validated, is internationally established, and has been successfully used for many years. The adhesive used is tissue-compatible, non-allergenic, and non-carcinogenic. In Switzerland, we at VENENCLINIC are among the first physicians to offer this innovative treatment.
You are usually able to resume social and professional activities immediately and can return to your normal routine shortly after the procedure.
VenaSeal® treatment is a self-pay service. Schedule a consultation at the VENENCLINIC to receive detailed information about the cost of VenaSeal® therapy for the treatment of varicose veins.
