During an X-ray examination of the veins, a contrast medium is injected into a blood vessel on the back of the foot so that the entire veins in the leg can be visualized. This procedure is becoming less and less necessary. Most questions can be answered adequately with the other examination methods already mentioned.
Contrast imaging of the leg veins, known as phlebography, is nowadays mainly used in cases where the previous duplex examination did not provide clear results. It is also used to visualize the origin of atypical varicose veins in the leg (varicography).
